Susie and Frank focus on the stitching<\/p><\/div>\n

I\u2019m thinking it\u2019s an unusual heading for a blog \u2013 but then again who knows what awaits us ?<\/p>\n

When you sail around the world you need to be largely self sufficient. And that means there will be times when you can\u2019t call up a doctor at a minutes notice. Although I do put my hand-up and say with the NHS it\u2019s not so easy getting an appointment in the first place.<\/p>\n

Susie managed to organise a private tutor through Stormforce based in Shamrock Quay to give us two days of medical training. Our tutor was Frank Schweitzer a retired consultant, yachtmaster examiner etc. who proved to be an excellent tutor and a heck of a good chap at that too. Susie and Frank had agreed a curriculum and we were joined by friends Neil and Hallie Meyrick. The brief was to cover key medical treatment, medicine for onboard a yacht and how to get help.<\/p>\n

Susie was soon showing herself to be quite some wannabe doctor peppering Frank with questions (all answered in his stride) and showing off some extensive first aid knowledge. I\u2019m thinking we may need to enrol her into medical school when we get back. Sunday was certainly the highlight as we got to practise stitching and administrating injections. That\u2019s where the pigs trotters came in. Duly cut up, we got to practise stitching them up and giving them injections. And everyone performed admirably well! Could be interesting doing that on a lurching boat \u2013 hopefully we will be very safe and it won\u2019t be needed.<\/p>\n

To wrap it up we went through a comprehensive list of medicines and kit to take with us. Antibiotics, painkillers and various other drugs with extensive latin names. Shan\u2019t mention the tubes that were recommended and made Tom cringe.<\/p>\n

Otherwise it\u2019s all systems go on Adina with trying to get everything ready and pushing folk you are relying on, to have things delivered on time. Simrad who supply navigation gear certainly get out worst customer service award. Promises to deliver kit that is not happening and without any updates \u2013 you have to chase them again and again!<\/p>\n
