Congratulations to Sir Robin Knox-Johnston who was awarded Sailing Today’s ‘Sailor of the Year’ Award at the Southampton Boatshow which we feel was richly deserved for one of the greatest sailors of our time.
Sam Fortescue, editor of Sailing Today magazine had this to say in presenting the award
“Is there no limit to the accolades garnered by the British sailing institution that is RKJ? His latest exploits include a very creditable finish in the singlehanded transatlantic Route du Rhum race at the age of 75. In our vote, he narrowly beat off competition from Tom Partridge and Susie Plume, the circumnavigators who set sail for Vanuatu carrying aid in the wake of Cyclone Pam. Sir Robin continues to inspire new generations of sailors, and shows that the freedom of the seas, whether racing or cruising, are a powerful elixir of youth”
Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for us. We appreciate your support both for voting and for our work in Vanuatu which led to the nomination in the first place. It has heartened us and encouraged us to go on and do more in the remote Pacific Islands, trying our best to help with small medical clinics, supporting schools and assisting in many other practical tasks. For us it was just the right thing to do and we’d do it again in the blink of an eye.
Thank you again.
