Opening up the floorboards

Sunday 21 October 2012

We realised the time had come to stay put and do some maintenance on Adina – indeed the chores were building up.

Turning on the heating for the first time, we’ve realised a boat is just like a home – having not been used in a long time it’s not going to work! So up went every floorboard we could find to trace the air con units. Good exercise as we discovered storage space and even some spares!

When working on boats it’s all about tracing where everything goes and what it does! So for example we now know we have 2 condensing units and 3 outlets. All checks done and a phone call revealed what we thought – it needs re-gassing. “But the manual says you should never need to do it”… “Yes, but your boat hasn’t been used in a long time”. “But…”. Yet another cost and the man who can do it works in Poole and that’ll be another chunky bill.

Then our long outstanding problem of the holding tank not pumping out. Again lots of pipes in awkward places. Traced it all, wrote on the pipes. Got an expert and he confirmed he thinks the same as me- probably the pump. Have to get that out then!

We also chose to clean the water filters. They really didn’t need it but oddly the water is now flowing smoothly!

Still need to solve why every weekend there is water in the bilges. That’s the next challenge.
Some people get addicted to fixing boats, I’m definitely more for sailing. Having said that it was a bit of fun and a relaxing weekend all said!
