Indonesia Phinisi boat under construction

Indonesia Phinisi boat under construction

We’re not doing a very good job of keeping the blog up-to-date at the moment! We’ve just enjoyed a few relaxing days in Kampongpasar in Sulawesi which is famous for its traditional wooden Indonesia Phinisi boats built on the beach. For Susie it will remain more famous for discovering avocado with chocolate drinks.

We’re off to Borneo tomorrow. There have been bad forest fires in Indonesia which have even impacted Singapore but we’ve learnt from a yacht located up the Kumai River that the situation has improved so we’re setting sail with the hope of seeing orangutans in Kalimatan. It’s another long passage of 600 nautical miles and the wind is forecast to be right behind us. It looks breezy and we hope we’ll get to fly our parasailor spinnaker – or else it’s that wretched rolly wing-on-wing sailing we so dislike. Fingers crossed for the former. We leave 5.30am 8th October Indonesia time.

Avocado with chocolate - a new favourite!

Enjoy your sail. I shall be most interested in your experiences in Borneo. I spent three months way back in 1964 trialling hovercraft in and around Tawau in Saba . It was then a small timber exporting port on the east coast close up to the Indonesian border. We subsequently moved on to Sibu for trials over rapids in the Rajang River.

Safe passage and hope you see heaps of wildlife in Borneo, not just the orangutangs but mouse deer, hornbills etc too. Wonderful. Will you have time to climb Mt Kinabalu? The micro-climates form concentric rings on the way up: from rain forest through temperate (look out for english blackbirds) to alpine peaks, each ring locking in the creatures that live there.
